Willcox & Gibbs
The Chain Stitcher Supreme. This different looking sewing machine dates back to late 1880s or so and was a fine new sewing machine then and still is today. It is a chain stitcher (using one thread) where our everyday sewing machines are lock stitch (using two threads). Two main functions of a good chain stitcher today is to bast garments for stitching and more fun is in Red Work (embroidery).

When properly setup this sewing machine is very useful and this one is setup well you will soon see.To learn much more about Chain Stitch and Red Work try to GOOGLE these words and have some fun.

This is a very fine machine cared for well for over 100 years or so and it comes with several attachments and new needles (Needles are available is several sizes). The price for this fine and well supplied setup is just $425.00.

It comes with a great motor. It is coupled to the machine through large felt pads for smoothness and quiet. This heavy duty Westinghouse motor should operate for years to come yet. This machine is loved in a treadle also.

The working plate is clean and bright and just large enough to do a great job. The stitch length adjuster is surface mounted on the plate. The top of dial appears inside the crown shape.

Looks like this badge was printed twice??? In many of the pictures the badge was covered with masking tape used when the base plate section was touched up a bit.

A few pictures follow of Red Work sewn on this nice machine. The process is rather simple to do. Just draw on the back side the image wanted. Stitch it on the reverse side and the desired work appears on the front side. There is a bit more than just this but this is how it starts.

The back side holds the heavier chain stitch. Heavier thread gives best results. In addition to the manual there is a instruction manual with how to do this work.

Stitching on the wrong side in this view. When you get into stitching on the W&G it is very much like any sewing machine used in the past.

A peek shows the work on the front side. This little giant of a sewing machine is fun to use. The manual instructs how to lock the stitch so it will not chain out when pulled. In basting work the chain is just pulled out with ease when the lock stitch is in place but it can be locked to last.

It takes a bit of practice to get good at it. At the turn of the 20th Century this machine sewed every thing so it has always been important and useful. Today chain stitching is used not only in clothing but in closing feed bags.

Pat ( DW) had never used a W&G chain stitcher and it took no time at all to sew away on it.

May have too many views of stitching but this is what it is all about with sewing machines. It is not a steep learning curve to chain stitch but it does take practice to up grade skill. Experience from past sewing will make all the difference in learning this one.

On this cabinet setup you plug the cabinet into the electricity from the wall. Simple as that. The sewing light and machine are ready to use when the cabinet is plugged in.
