Pfaff 31
All German made while a clone copy of the Singer 15-xx sewing machine. It appears the Germans liked to use others better sewing machines while making an even better sewing machine and treadle. This is such an example. The bobbin case and bobbins (not Singer clones) are the same as the Pfaff 30, 130, and other Pfaffs that followed. The real charm of working with German 'stuff' is it is well made and made to last.

Through the years (??) several issues developed but they all have been corrected or repaired. The door/lid lock has been re-keyed, the loose hinges tightened or re-hung, the stray paint drips have been removed, the lost and damaged door knobs have been replaced and some more BUT now it is together and beautiful to look at and to use.

Of course it has been serviced and restored. Waiting now on the new bobbin winder tire. Have a generic manual, new bobbins, new needles and it will take all of the old Singer accessaries such as the Buttonhole machine, Ruffler, Braider, etc. The price for this beauty is just $275.00

It is obvious that this design was cloned from the Singer 15-XX class sewing machine. Better design was applied to the bobbin/hook area and the bobbin winder system. It is just as strong a stitcher as the Singer.

Note the bobbin winder rubber tire is missing. The new tire is ordered and will be here soon.

The thread tension system is simular to the older models of sewing machines made at or near the turn of the century. They did not yet have position marked tension dials but they did function very well.

The stitch length and back tack systejm is like the Singer it was cloned from. Note the somewhat different looking bobbin winder design. Lets the thread loading onto the bobbin load level. Nice feature.

This end looks simular to the singer. It is a low shank and can use all of the old Singer accessaries and presser feet. The lack of chrome throughout the sewing machine suggest this machine may have been made when some metals were scarce in Germany. Wonder when that was!

Back to the cabinet now. Very heavy and solid wood construction. Makes a very durable cabinet and not fragil at all. One keyed lock locks the top and dbl. doors. All veneer is laid on with a netting under the surface and it stays down where it is suppose to.

Every thing now set to the sewing mode. Treadle operates very well and is easy to use. The grill below the treadle peddle is open for ventilation from the floor.

Close-up of the treadle area. Note the large opening under the treadle. This allows ventilation to move upward through the closed treadle area. The German treadles always display the oil shelf and a foot rest. Find them both in this view.

On the left side door panel is this nice set of drawers. One drawer has the holder for the long bobbins of the VS machines of the time.

Notice the hand changing the bobbin out is under the machine and comfortable looking with the task. This special design is very helpful.

An easy reach for the operator. (The requirement to change the bobbin can be so difficult on many sewing machines but not on this one)
